- Self Sufficiency begins with growing your own food . A lot of people think you need land and all these extra supplies for your soil and etc. Most times ( a lot of the time) you actually only need water, sunlight, and dirt. You can do raised garden beds almost anywhere, growing veggies, herbs, and fruits will save money on the grocery bill for sure. Potting plants on a balcony, windowsill, or even growing low-light plants like salads or basil can help reduce buying at the grocery stores.
- Learning to Can and Freeze foods. Preservation can go a long way in the Summer and Winter months once you already have inventory. Canning Goods may take a little time to get used to but once you get the gist, you can pretty much can anything. Things like Beans, Tomatoes, some fruits can be canned for up to 3 years. You can even can Pastas, Soups and stews!
- Breadmaking ! Soon I will post how I make loaf bread for things like sandwiches and toast. Breadmaking is an essential part of self sufficient living. You can make a loaf of bread for less than $1 in most cases. Plus it involves simple ingredients like Yeast, water, flour, sugar, salt and butter.
- Eating sustainable by eating whats in season to reduce food waste. In-season food often times cost less . Have you ever thought about what foods are in season right now where you live? Most foods we eat are shipped from all over the world and of course we do not have labels that tell us what is in season and whats not. Check out Foods in Season for Autumn :
