Embracing a Confident Zero Waste Kitchen Journey
Embarking on a zero waste journey in the kitchen is an empowering way to make a positive impact on the environment and promote sustainable living and cooking. By incorporating a few simple practices, you have the opportunity to significantly decrease the amount of waste your household produces. Here are some empowering tips to assist you in transitioning to a zero waste lifestyle in the kitchen:
1. Meal Planning by KEFI Handmade
The beginning of KEFI Handmade started from working a 9-5 and never having enough space/time to cook a good healthy meal for myself. So, I started creating meal plans for the week. At first, I had to get used to it and see what I liked and didn’t like after 3 days lol. Being a self taught chef, I thought to myself, “why not prep 2 or three meals a week instead of the same things 5 days a week. Nothing gets boring and I still have a variety of food. Just healthier”. Now that I am Freelance, I create a variety of meal plans for others to enjoy a week of healthy plant based foods. Take charge of meal planning to avoid overbuying food items and to creatively use up leftovers. By utilizing perishable ingredients before they spoil and storing bulk items in reusable containers, you can confidently minimize packaging waste.
2. Sustainable Food Storage
Explore the world of reusable and sustainable food storage options such as Glass jars, Beeswax wraps and Stainless steel containers. Say “Goodbye” to single-use plastic bags, bleached parchment paper and cling film.
3. Composting
Seize the opportunity to set up a compost system for organic kitchen waste like vegetable peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells. Composting not only reduces the amount of organic waste going to landfills but also provides nutrient-rich soil for gardening.
4. Smart Shopping Habits
Choose package-free or bulk items when grocery shopping and confidently bring your own reusable bags, containers, and produce bags to minimize the use of disposable packaging. Remember to look foods in glass jars too. You can reuse those same glass gars to store things like fresh cut fruit and veggies.
5. DIY Cleaning Products
Embrace the creativity of making your own eco-friendly cleaning products using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils. This confidently reduces the need for purchasing cleaning products in single-use plastic bottles.
6. Reduce Single-Use Items
Confidently replace single-use items such as paper towels, disposable cutlery, and plastic straws with reusable alternatives – Cloth napkins, bamboo utensils, and stainless steel straws are assertive and sustainable options.
7. Mindful Cooking Practices
Take charge of mindful cooking by using the entire edible portion of ingredients and getting creative with repurposing food scraps. This confident approach minimizes food waste and maximizes ingredient utilization. Here at KEFI Handmade, we recently made a homemade Apple, Pear, and Lime dry rub. We currently do not own a dehydrator so we used the oven. The rub came out perfect and tasted amazing on some baked chicken and veggies.
8. Supporting Local and Sustainable Food Sources
Foster a connection with the community by confidently sourcing your food from local farmers’ markets and sustainable producers. This reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation and supports environmentally friendly farming practices.
By confidently infusing these empowering tips into your kitchen routine, you can significantly reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle. Embracing a zero waste mindset in the kitchen not only benefits the environment but also fosters mindful consumption and resourcefulness.
