Meraki Ceramics – Smug Bowl

Today we are diving into the realm of Meraki Ceramics, where every creation is created with soul, passion, and love. As I stepped into my ceramics studio, located in the back of the kitchen lol, I had sense of passion come through me. I started setting the stage for what would be a creative experience. The beginning of this process was actually easier than I thought it was going to be. For the first time, I was able to center my clay correctly and create this cute little smug bowl. With the guidance of the skilled artisans on Youtube, I quickly found my rhythm, molding and shaping the clay with newfound confidence. To feel connected to the earth and allowing myself to slow down for the moment was amazing.

As I finished , shaping and transforming this lump of clay into a piece of artwork, my vision came into play. Carefully dragging wire underneath and lifting the bowl off the wheel; with not having access to a kiln, I let this piece airdry for a couple days while I put my attention to other things.

After about a day and a half, I carved my lines and dots for some extra detail. Working with clay is new to me so I waited a little while so I could see how the clay air drying process works. This bowl is about 10cm wide and 4cm deep. 9 Lines for Completion and New Beginnings and 8 Dots for Abundance and Manifestation.

Once it became Airdry after a few days I painted it. Purple metallic inside to represent African royal culture and dark green on the outside for abundance and wealth. For the lines and dots carved, I panted a light blue to represent love, togetherness and peace.

Looking at my artwork now, I feel prideful, realizing that Meraki Ceramics is my one of my happy places, a place where something can come to life, literally using mud. After all, as my cute little smug bowl taught me, the journey of creation is often easier than we think – all it takes is a leap of faith and willingness to embrace the unknown.

Until next time, keep creating, keep dreaming, and above all, keeping believing in the power of your own creativity.

With love and clay-covered hands, Jade 🌻.
